Established in 1863, The Dorcas Charitable Trust is a registered charity dedicated to supporting the patients of Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Our projects involve providing workshops and new clothing working in the background of the day to day ongoings of the hospital.

OUR HISTORY

1863

DORCAS SOCIETY ESTABLISHED

Beatrice Clugston, alongside Anne B. Church, founded The Dorcas Society at Glasgow Royal Infirmary to provide clothing and support for patients upon discharge.

1865

GLASGOW CONVALESCENT HOME AT BOTHWELL

Clugston established the first convalescent home in the West of Scotland at Bothwell, accommodating 1,800 patients annually.

1869

DUNOON CONVALESCENT HOME OPENED

The second convalescent home, located in Dunoon, was opened by the Earl of Glasgow, providing 130 beds for patients.

1871

MAJOR FUNDING BAZAAR

Clugston organized a significant fundraising event at Glasgow City Hall, raising £8,027, the largest amount ever raised in Scotland at that time for charity.

1876

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch FOUNDED

With Clugston’s support, Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch was established to care for incurable patients, marking a significant development in healthcare provision.

1893

INTRODUCTION OF NURSING EDUCATION SCHEME

Rebecca Strong, Matron at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, introduced a structured nursing education program, laying the foundation for modern nursing training.

1942

MABEL’S TEAROOM ESTABLISHED

Mabel MacKinlay initiated a tearoom service for outpatients at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, with all profits supporting The Dorcas Society.

1947

INTEGRATION WITH NHS SCOTLAND

Glasgow Royal Infirmary became part of NHS Scotland, continuing its mission to provide quality healthcare and support services.

1995

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch CLOSURE

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch ceased operations, but its legacy continues through the Beatrice Meadows housing development, named in honor of Clugston.
