SUPPORTING PATIENTS IN GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY

We are a multidisciplinary team composed of professionals with firsthand experience across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, legal, financial services, and business management.

OUR HISTORY

1863

DORCAS SOCIETY ESTABLISHED

Beatrice Clugston, alongside Anne B. Church, founded The Dorcas Society at Glasgow Royal Infirmary to provide clothing and support for patients upon discharge.

1865

GLASGOW CONVALESCENT HOME AT BOTHWELL

Clugston established the first convalescent home in the West of Scotland at Bothwell, accommodating 1,800 patients annually.

1869

DUNOON CONVALESCENT HOME OPENED

The second convalescent home, located in Dunoon, was opened by the Earl of Glasgow, providing 130 beds for patients.

1871

MAJOR FUNDING BAZAAR

Clugston organized a significant fundraising event at Glasgow City Hall, raising £8,027, the largest amount ever raised in Scotland at that time for charity.

1876

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch FOUNDED

With Clugston’s support, Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch was established to care for incurable patients, marking a significant development in healthcare provision.

1893

INTRODUCTION OF NURSING EDUCATION SCHEME

Rebecca Strong, Matron at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, introduced a structured nursing education program, laying the foundation for modern nursing training.

1942

MABEL’S TEAROOM ESTABLISHED

Mabel MacKinlay initiated a tearoom service for outpatients at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, with all profits supporting The Dorcas Society.

1947

INTEGRATION WITH NHS SCOTLAND

Glasgow Royal Infirmary became part of NHS Scotland, continuing its mission to provide quality healthcare and support services.

1995

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch CLOSURE

Broomhill Hospital, Kirkintilloch ceased operations, but its legacy continues through the Beatrice Meadows housing development, named in honor of Clugston.

PRESENT DAY ONGOING IMPACT

The Dorcas Society’s legacy endures through various charitable initiatives and community support programs, reflecting Clugston’s enduring influence on healthcare and philanthropy.

TRUSTEES DEVOTING THEIR TIME & EFFORTS SINCE 1863

The Trustees are volunteers who meet up once per month to devote their time and efforts to the health and wellbeing of patients of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Hi, I’m Sally Hughes and have been a Dorcas Trustee since 2015. Prior to then, for about 18 years, as a senior nurse, I was a GRI nurse advisor on the committee, supporting the team with request decision making and hospital practices where the Dorcas donations would benefit patients and families during hospital stays. As a team, we strive to support the comfort of patients and assist hospital staff in the delivery of their care.

I became a Dorcas Trustee following an episode as a patient in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I originally worked in the clothing room but have been Chairperson for a number of years.

Was a physio in Rottenrow,PRMGyn Oncology laterally and retired in 2022 Was a climber did many Munro’s,ran for many years doing half marathons and now spend time ordering and sourcing clothing for the clothing room. Also volunteer for Glasgow City Mission and FOGRI and in what spare time I have attend classes at a gym in Finnieston

Formerly Senior Charge Nurse of Ward 9, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Christine is responsible for supporting the Dorcas trust clothing room with toiletries.
